Painter and filmmaker (1957–2023)

Claudio Isaac

Claudio Isaac (Mexico City, 1957–2023) was an artist and filmmaker whose work explores the link between visual narrative and poetic language. Having studied film and literature, he combined these disciplines to create introspective art rich in symbolism.

His visual work blends painting, photography and graphic elements, creating a unique narrative that reflects his sensitivity to identity, memory and time. Isaac's work stands out for its emotional charge, where the abstract and the figurative intertwine, inviting viewers to discover hidden nuances of reality. His pieces explore Mexican culture, historical legacy and social struggles, merging the visual with the literary.

As a boy, Isaac appeared on screen as a child actor in Tiempo de morir, and later worked as a filmmaker, standing out with El día que murió Pedro Infante, nominated for the Ariel Award. His literary work includes Cenizas de mi padre, Alma húmeda and Luis Buñuel: a mediodía. He also made a series of documentaries on figures such as Octavio Paz and Jaime Sabines, with his last documentary, Sin Dios y sin diablo, in 2012.

From 1966 onward he exhibited his work in renowned galleries, establishing himself as an artist who uniquely combined the poetic, the cinematic and the visual. His work has been described as a bridge between the visual and the literary, challenging conventions and exploring the limits of contemporary narrative.
